Pillows as a couple: two different needs in a single shared bed

A bed is shared, a pillow is not. This is one of the worst adjusted comfort settings in a bedroom: two people buy the same pillow on the same day, because both sides of the bed should match, and one of them sleeps worse for years without making the connection.

The logic is simple. The right pillow height depends on shoulder width and sleeping position. Both vary from one person to the next. This article explains how each person finds their height, and how to keep a visually consistent bed without forcing the same setting on both.

Two body types, two heights

When you sleep on your side there is a gap between the mattress and your ear: the thickness of your shoulder. The pillow has to fill that gap so the head stays in line with the spine. The wider the shoulders, the bigger the gap, so the more height is needed. Someone who is 1.80 m and someone who is 1.60 m do not have the same gap to fill, even in the same position.

On your back the reasoning flips. There is almost no gap left, only the natural curve of the neck. A pillow that is too high pushes the chin towards the chest and keeps the neck under tension all night. Many people describe this in the morning as a stiff neck without knowing where it comes from. These pointers are about comfort and posture, they do not replace medical advice: pain that lasts or wakes you calls for a health professional.

What sleeping position changes

Position is not a matter of taste, it is the first criterion for height. Most people have a dominant position and shift two or three times a night. So you set the height for the position you fall asleep in and spend the most time in, not the one you happen to wake up in. Getting that single criterion right settles most of the choice, well before any question of filling or finish.

Spotting your dominant position takes one night of observation. Note the position you take when you switch off the light, and the one you are in when you wake. If they match, the answer is clear. If they differ, favour the falling-asleep position: it covers the first part of the night, the longest stretch of deep sleep. One night of paying attention is usually enough to decide.

  • ·Side sleeping: high setting, around 10 cm, to fill the shoulder gap
  • ·Back sleeping: low setting, around 7 cm, to keep the chin clear
  • ·Alternating side and back: set for the falling-asleep position
  • ·Broad shoulders: go one step up from the standard reference
  • ·Smaller frame: go one step down, a pillow that is too high hinders more than it helps

One model, two settings

The simplest answer for a couple is not two different models, with two looks and two lifespans. It is one pillow that carries several heights. The Nuage 50 is a memory foam pillow with slow rebound foam, 50 × 30 cm, with two wave heights on the same product: 10 cm on one side, 7 cm on the other. You switch by flipping it over.

In practice, the side sleeper turns the high wave towards them, the back sleeper turns the low wave. Both pillows look identical on the bed, the cover is the same, the bed stays consistent. And if positions change, late in a pregnancy, after a move, with age, there is nothing to buy again: you flip the pillow. Nothing else about the bed has to change.

Second pillow and a consistent bed

This is where the second pillow at 20 % off fits naturally: a double bed is furnished in pairs. Two pillows bought at the same time age together, get replaced together, and avoid the classic situation of a new side and a tired side. The Nuage 50 comes on its own at 55 €, or with its textured cover at 65 €.

For the look, the Housse Nuage in jacquard cotton is cut to the wave shape of the pillow and comes in six colours: denim blue, sage green, charcoal, sky blue, red gingham, blue gingham. At 22 € each, with the buy three get two free offer, it dresses both sides of the bed the same way while keeping clean covers in rotation during washing.

A couple does not need the same pillow, they need the same model set differently. Sleeping position and shoulder width decide the height, and a two-height pillow lets each person find theirs without breaking the unity of the bed. The second pillow at 20 % off makes the pair consistent from the start.

Frequently asked questions

Should both people in a couple use the same pillow?+

No. The same model, yes, for looks and lifespan, but not the same setting. Height depends on sleeping position and shoulder width, which vary from one person to the next. A two-height pillow settles the question without buying two references.

What pillow height for side sleeping?+

Around 10 cm for an average adult frame. You need to fill the space between the shoulder and the ear so the head stays in line with the spine. Broad shoulders call for a little more, a smaller frame for a little less.

Can you change pillow height without buying a new one?+

Yes, if the pillow carries two heights. The Nuage 50 has a 10 cm wave and a 7 cm wave on the same product: you flip it to move from one to the other. Useful when your sleeping position changes over time.
