Plasterboard or concrete ceiling: how to mount a ceiling fan safely

A compact retractable model with LED, such as the Boréal 107, weighs around 5 kg. A large 132 cm solid-wood fixed-blade model reaches 8 to 10 kg. Not heavy, but not an 800 g ceiling light either.

In operation, the fan adds a dynamic load: slight vibrations repeated thousands of times an hour. A fixing that holds at rest can loosen over time if it is not anchored in solid material. Hence a simple rule: you never hang a fan from a plasterboard sheet alone, you fix it to what lies behind.

Plasterboard is the most common case in homes built or renovated in the last thirty years. The 13 mm sheet itself must not carry the load. Behind it run metal rails every 60 cm, or wooden joists in older builds.

The method: locate the rail or joist with a stud finder or by tapping, then screw the fan bracket straight into it with screws suited to metal or wood. If the light point falls between two rails, a wooden cross-piece placed between them through the opening creates a solid point.

In recent homes the light point often has a recessed connection box designed to carry a fixture of several kilos. Check for it: it is the best case, the fixing is already ready.

In a concrete slab, mounting is the simplest: two holes with a hammer drill, two concrete anchors, the supplied bracket, and the unit holds forever. The only precaution is not to drill into an electrical conduit: the existing light point shows the zone to avoid.

On a beam or exposed joists, screw directly into the wood with long wood screws. It is the ideal support: rigid, vibration-absorbing, no plug needed. If the beam is sloped, an articulated canopy corrects the angle.

A suspended ceiling, in tiles or panelling, carries nothing. You must go up to the original structure with a threaded rod or a hanging bracket and let the false ceiling be trim only. It is the one case where a professional is worth it if you are not equipped.

Before ordering, cut the power at the breaker, unscrew the current light cover and look: a round plastic box with pins is a connection box; a bare sheet with two wires means you will need to find the structure. This two-minute test tells you exactly which case you are in.

On the day, a compact model goes up alone in thirty minutes: bracket, three wires on the terminal block, body clipped on, batteries in the remote. The Boréal 107 comes with an illustrated manual and all fixings. Once up, run it at full speed for a minute: if it does not move, it is good for years.
