Fitting a ceiling fan in 30 minutes: what is true, what takes longer

Fits in thirty minutes appears on almost every ceiling fan sheet. It is true, but with conditions the sheets do not state. This article gives the minute-by-minute sequence of a real installation of the Boréal 107 on a standard light point, then the three situations where the half hour becomes an hour, or an electrician's appointment.

The goal is to know, before ordering, which case you are in: the one where you fit it alone on a Saturday morning, or the one where something else must be planned.

The thirty minutes, minute by minute

Minutes 0 to 5: cut the lighting circuit breaker, check with a tester that there is no voltage left, remove the old ceiling light and unclip its plug. Minutes 5 to 15: present the fan's mounting bracket on the box, screw it into the provided points, check it does not move by pulling on it firmly; it must hold 5 kg with margin. Minutes 15 to 25: connect live, neutral and earth on the terminal block, hang the motor body on the bracket, clip the cover.

Minutes 25 to 30: reset the breaker, pair the remote, test light, speeds and blade deployment. Done. This sequence assumes two tools, a screwdriver and a voltage tester, a stable stepladder, and the manual attached to the order confirmation, read before climbing the stepladder. A first mounting without reading the manual takes forty-five minutes; the second takes twenty.

  • ·0 to 5 min: cut, test, remove the old ceiling light
  • ·5 to 15 min: fix the bracket, check it holds
  • ·15 to 25 min: wire, hang, clip
  • ·25 to 30 min: reset, pair, test

Case 1: no ceiling box

In older unrenovated homes, the light point is sometimes a simple connector on two wires coming out of the ceiling, with a hook or a screw. Wiring remains possible and simple: connect live, neutral and earth on the fan's terminal block exactly as for a ceiling light. What changes is the fixing: the fan's bracket must be screwed directly into the ceiling, with plugs suited to the material.

Count an hour instead of thirty minutes, time to drill and plug. If the ceiling is concrete, two hammer plugs are enough. If the light point has no earth, which happens in old installations, the fan works but the installation is not to standard; that is the moment to call an electrician to run an earth, or at least have it checked.

Case 2: plasterboard ceiling without reinforcement

A plasterboard ceiling on a metal frame holds a 1 kg ceiling light, not necessarily a 5 kg fan that turns. The test is simple: after screwing the bracket, pull on it firmly downward; if the ceiling deforms or the screws move, the fixing is not suitable. You must then reach the metal frame or a joist with longer screws, or fit a reinforcing cross-piece above the ceiling if the loft is accessible.

This case takes an extra hour, or an electrician if the frame cannot be found. The Boréal 107 is a light model, about 5 kg, which leaves margin compared with classic 8 to 12 kg fans; that is often what allows staying on the existing fixing when a heavier model would have required reinforcement.

Case 3: light point to create or move

If the room has no ceiling light point, or if it is in a corner while the fan must be in the centre, a ceiling box must be created or moved. That is an electrician's job: run a cable from the switch or the existing point, fit a box, and close up cleanly. Count one to two hours, 60 to 120 euros of labour depending on the region, and a little filling on the ceiling.

It is the only case where installation is not done yourself. In the other two, it stays within reach of someone who has already changed a ceiling light. The rule before ordering: look at the ceiling. A round ceiling box with a plug that unclips in the centre of the room: thirty minutes. Two wires and a hook: an hour. Nothing on the ceiling: an electrician.

Thirty minutes is the real time on a ceiling box in the centre of the room, with the manual read and the unit tested on the floor. An hour without a box or on plasterboard to reinforce. An electrician only if the light point must be created or moved. The Boréal 107, at 5 kg, stays on the existing fixing in the great majority of cases.

Frequently asked questions

Is an electrician needed to fit a ceiling fan?+

Not if a light point with a ceiling box exists in the right place: installation is done yourself in thirty minutes with a screwdriver and a tester. An electrician is required only to create or move the light point, or run a missing earth.

How long does installation really take?+

Thirty minutes on a sound ceiling box: five removing, ten fixing, ten wiring and mounting, five testing. An hour without a ceiling box or on a plasterboard ceiling to reinforce.

How do I know if my ceiling will support the fan?+

After screwing the bracket, pull on it firmly downward: if nothing moves, it holds. The Boréal 107 weighs about 5 kg, which suits any properly fitted ceiling box and a concrete ceiling; on plasterboard, you must reach the frame or a joist.
