Preparing next summer in October: why fit your ceiling fan before the heatwave

The reflex is always the same: the first night at 28 °C in the bedroom, you look for a fan. And you discover everyone had the same reflex the same day. Decent models are out of stock, lead times go from 6 to 20 days, the electrician offers a slot in three weeks.

There is another way: deciding in autumn, when nobody is thinking about it, when the choice is complete and the calendar empty. This article explains what you gain by preparing summer in October, and why the fan will not sit useless until June.

What happens every June

The fan market is seasonal in the extreme. The year's sales concentrate in a few weeks, triggered by the first heat episode. Sellers know it and stock up, but never enough for an unpredictable peak: two days of forecast heat empty the warehouses. The remaining models are the least wanted, often the noisiest or the least attractive.

Lead times follow: a parcel shipped in 6 to 10 working days in October leaves in 15 to 20 days in June, for lack of stock or logistics capacity. And for those who want it fitted, electricians receive requests for air conditioning, fans and blinds in the same week. Result: you sleep badly three more weeks, precisely the ones when you needed the unit.

What the fan does between October and June

The objection is fair: what use is a fan in November. The answer is winter mode. By reversing the rotation, at minimum speed, the fan brings the warm air accumulated at the ceiling back to the floor, with no draught. The room becomes even: no more 4 °C gap between feet and ceiling. You lower the thermostat 1 to 2 °C, which is 7 to 14% less heating over the season, for 5 W of consumption.

The Boréal 107 also provides light. Fitted in October, it replaces the ceiling light with a dimmable LED in three whites: 2700 K for winter evenings, 4000 K for short days. So the unit serves every day from installation, and the retractable blades stay folded until June: a flat 15 cm ceiling light, nothing more.

  • ·November to March: winter mode, even heat, thermostat a notch lower
  • ·All year: dimmable LED ceiling light, three colour temperatures
  • ·June to September: blades out, cooling at 30 dB

Installing without urgency: the luxury of an empty calendar

In autumn you install on a Saturday morning, calmly. You test the unit on the floor before fitting it, choose the spot by looking at the room rather than sweating, check blade height, set the remote. Thirty minutes, with time to read the manual attached to the order confirmation. If an electrician is preferable, they have slots within the week, not in three.

You also have time to return. The 14 days of withdrawal run from receipt: in October you can inspect, compare, change your mind without the pressure of a 28 °C night pushing you to keep anything. And payment in three instalments spreads the expense over autumn, far from holiday budgets.

The first 30 °C day

The real benefit is measured that day. While neighbours look for a sold-out fan, you press the remote: the blades unfold, the room starts moving, the felt temperature drops 3 °C. The night passes at 30 dB, without air jet, without waking. The next day you no longer think about the fan, it has been part of the room for eight months.

That is the difference between enduring a heatwave and crossing it. It is decided in October, for 157 euros, with a unit that will already have served all winter.

Buying in October means choosing your model instead of taking what is left, installing calmly, using the unit from winter in reverse mode and as a ceiling light, and reaching the first heatwave day already equipped. The Boréal 107 is delivered in 6 to 10 working days, with no autumn stock-out, and payable in three instalments.

Frequently asked questions

Is a ceiling fan any use in winter?+

Yes, in reverse mode at minimum speed: it brings warm air from the ceiling back to the floor without draught, which allows lowering the thermostat 1 to 2 °C for 5 W of consumption. It also serves as an LED ceiling light all year.

Why are fans out of stock in June?+

Because the year's sales concentrate in the first hot days. Stocks go in 48 hours, delivery times double, and electricians are booked for weeks. In autumn everything is available and the calendar is empty.

Can the blades stay folded all winter?+

Yes. Folded, the blades form a flat disc about 15 cm under the ceiling. The unit serves as a ceiling light, and winter mode works with the blades out at minimum speed if you wish to even out the heat.
