Ceiling fan LED: dimmable, 2700 K or 6000 K, how many lumens? The guide to lighting well

A ceiling fan with light replaces the ceiling light. For the swap to be an upgrade and not a compromise, the light must be at least as good as the one you remove. Yet product pages often settle for integrated LED, with no number.

This guide explains the three figures to read, lumens, kelvins and dimming, what they mean in a real room, and the values that make a fan light a living room, bedroom, kitchen or office well.

Lumens: the amount of light, room by room

The lumen measures emitted light. A classic living-room ceiling light with a 60 W equivalent bulb gives about 800 lumens; a well-lit 20 m² living room needs 1,500 to 2,500 lumens of general lighting, a bedroom 1,000 to 1,500, a kitchen or office 2,000 to 3,000 to see what you are doing.

A fan whose LED claims 500 lumens replaces nothing: you will keep other lamps. From 1,500 lumens it becomes the main light of a living space, and the dimmer takes it down to 20 % in the evening. Look for the number; if it is missing, it is usually low.

Kelvins: the colour of the light, and the mood

The kelvin measures colour temperature. 2700 K is a warm white, that of old incandescent bulbs: restful, it prepares for sleep, flatters wood and warm colours. 4000 K is a neutral white, close to overcast daylight: versatile, for daytime. 6000 K is a cool, bluish white: stimulating, for working, cooking, DIY.

An LED locked on a single temperature is a constraint: cool white in a bedroom prevents falling asleep, warm white in a kitchen tires the eyes. An LED adjustable across three temperatures from the remote adapts to the hour and the use. That is the Boréal 107's choice: 2700 K, 4000 K, 6000 K, at the press of a button.

  • ·Bedroom: 2700 K in the evening, 4000 K in the morning
  • ·Living room: 2700 K for a film, 4000 K for reading, entertaining
  • ·Kitchen, office: 4000 K to 6000 K
  • ·Painting on the wall: 2700 K in the evening for reds and golds

Dimming: what makes the light liveable

A ceiling light that only knows full on or off is corridor lighting. In a living room you want 100 % to tidy, 50 % to dine, 20 % for a film. In a bedroom, 30 % in the evening and 100 % to make the bed. The dimmer is what makes a single ceiling fixture enough, without an extra floor lamp or bedside lamp.

Check that dimming is done from the remote, continuously or in steps, and that the unit remembers the last setting. A quality dimmable LED does not flicker at low intensity: that is something reviews reveal, not spec sheets.

Lifespan, consumption, and the replacement question

An integrated LED generally claims 50,000 hours: at ten hours a day, nearly fifteen years. It draws 15 to 25 W for 2,000 lumens, against 120 W for the halogen equivalent. Over fifteen years the saving covers the price of the unit.

The trade-off is that an integrated LED is not changed like a bulb: it is part of the unit. That is only a problem if it is poor quality; hence the importance of the warranty, which must cover the light as much as the motor. The Boréal 107 has a 2-year warranty, LED included, with support in Europe.

Three figures to read on a light spec: 1,500 to 2,500 lumens to replace a ceiling light, an adjustable temperature from 2700 K to 6000 K to follow the hour and the use, and a dimmer from the remote. The Boréal 107 brings them together: integrated LED in three temperatures, dimmable, 50,000 hours, 2-year warranty. Off, it is the room's ceiling light; that is the first reason it must light well.

Frequently asked questions

How many lumens for a ceiling fan LED?+

1,500 to 2,500 lumens to replace a living-room or bedroom ceiling light, 2,000 to 3,000 for a kitchen or office. Below 1,000 lumens the fan does not light enough to be the main light.

2700 K or 6000 K for a ceiling fan?+

2700 K warm white for evenings and the bedroom, 4000 K neutral for daytime, 6000 K cool white for cooking or working. Best is an LED adjustable across all three from the remote, as on the Boréal 107, to change with the hour.

Can the LED of a ceiling fan be replaced?+

Generally not, it is built into the unit. It lasts 50,000 hours, nearly fifteen years at ten hours a day. Check that the warranty covers the light as well as the motor: it does on the Boréal 107, 2-year warranty with support in Europe.
