Inside a ceiling fan box: what is supplied, what is missing, what to prepare

The delivery arrives, you open the box, and the question is always the same: is everything there, and what do I need to have on hand? For a ceiling fan the answer fits in a list of six supplied parts and three tools to plan.

This article details the typical contents of a compact fan box, using the Boréal 107 as the example, what to check on unboxing, and the preparation that makes the installation take thirty minutes rather than an afternoon.

The six parts that must be in the box

A compact retractable-blade ceiling fan ships as one block: the body of the unit, motor and folded blades, with the integrated LED. Around it, five items make installation possible without buying anything: the ceiling mounting bracket, the bracket screws, the connection plug or terminal block, the remote with its batteries, and the manual.

The manual deserves a word: it must be illustrated, with the wiring diagram for the three wires and the remote pairing procedure. A pictogram-only leaflet turns thirty minutes into an hour of hesitation. The Boréal 107 ships with an illustrated manual, and a PDF version sent by email on ordering.

What is never supplied, and must be at home before delivery

Three things are in no fan box, and are missing on the day if you have not thought of them. A stable stepladder, high enough to work at ceiling height with arms horizontal, not stretched overhead. A voltage tester, five euros at any DIY store, to check the power is really off before touching a wire. And, if the ceiling is concrete, two suitable anchors and a hammer drill: the supplied screws are meant for a connection box or wood.

Add a cross-head screwdriver and, optionally, a second person to hold the body during wiring: a 5 kg compact model can be fitted alone, but it is more comfortable with two.

Unboxing: the checks to make straight away

Before climbing the stepladder, unpack everything on a table and check three things. The parts list, counting the screws. The condition of the blades and body, no scratch or impact mark, especially on the LED diffuser. And the remote's operation, fitting the batteries and watching the indicator. That is when a return is simplest: unit not installed, box intact, fourteen days to change your mind.

Take the moment to identify the unit's three wires and their colours, live, neutral and earth, and read the manual once through. Ten minutes of preparation at the table save an hour of trips up and down the ladder.

The box, transport and installation day

A compact fan travels in a box of a few kilos: a standard parcel, delivered in 6 to 10 working days, with tracking sent by email. It is carried in one hand, goes up a staircase without help, and stores until installation Saturday. A large fixed-blade model arrives in a far bulkier box and needs two people.

On the day, with everything above prepared, the sequence is simple: breaker off, old light removed, bracket screwed on, wires connected, body clipped, batteries in the remote, power restored, speeds and light tested. Thirty minutes. And keep the box, with the old ceiling light inside, for the day you move.

Six parts in the box, body, bracket, screws, plug, remote, manual, and three tools to plan, stepladder, tester, concrete anchors if needed. Ten minutes of checking at the table, thirty minutes of fitting. The Boréal 107 ships complete, illustrated manual included, in a box carried in one hand.

Frequently asked questions

What is in a ceiling fan box?+

The unit body with motor, blades and LED, the ceiling mounting bracket, its screws, the connection plug or a terminal block, the remote with batteries and a manual. Check that the manual is illustrated and in your language.

What tools do you need to install a ceiling fan?+

A stable stepladder, a voltage tester, a cross-head screwdriver, and a drill with two suitable anchors if the ceiling is concrete. Nothing else: bracket, screws and plug come with the unit.

What to check when unboxing a ceiling fan?+

The parts list, the absence of scratches or impact marks on blades and diffuser, and the remote's operation with its batteries. Do it before fitting the unit: that is when a return within fourteen days is simplest.
