Ceiling fan for a 15 m² bedroom: which diameter, what height, where to put it

The bedroom is where a ceiling fan changes life the most: eight hours lying still, under the roof or not, with a window you dare not leave open. It is also the room where people most often get the diameter wrong.

This guide answers the three practical questions of a 12 to 16 m² bedroom, the most common size: which diameter, what height, where to fit it. With a word on light and night settings.

Diameter: 107 cm, no more

The sizing rule for ceiling fans is simple: up to 10 m², 90 to 107 cm; 10 to 21 m², 107 to 122 cm; 20 to 30 m², 132 cm; beyond, 152 cm or two units. A 15 m² bedroom sits squarely in the 107 cm range.

It is not only about power. In a bedroom you only use the low speeds: at night, speed 1 or 2, for an imperceptible air movement that takes 2 to 3 °C off the felt temperature. A 132 cm in 15 m² would be permanently held at its minimum and would fill half the ceiling. The 107 cm is comfortable, discreet, and still has margin for a tropical night.

Height: 2.2 m under the blades, and what that means at 2.5 m

The comfort and safety rule wants at least 2.2 m between floor and blades. Below that, a tall person can raise an arm into the blades, and the air moves too close to heads. With a standard 2.5 m ceiling, it all depends on the unit's depth.

A model on a downrod drops 30 to 40 cm: you end up at 2.1 m, too low. A compact flush model like the Boréal 107 is 15 to 20 cm deep: blades at 2.3 or 2.35 m, within the rule, and the unit reads as a ceiling light when off. It is the only type of fan that suits a 2.5 m bedroom without compromise.

  • ·2.4 m ceiling: compact model required, blades at 2.2 m
  • ·2.5 m ceiling: compact model, blades at 2.3 to 2.35 m, ideal
  • ·2.7 m and above: compact or short downrod, your choice
  • ·Sloped attic: fit on the highest part, never on the sloped ridge

Position: in the centre, never over the headboard

In most bedrooms the existing light point is in the centre of the room, and that is exactly where the fan should be: the air spreads over the whole area. If the bed is against the wall and the light point falls right above the headboard, the air lands on the face: unpleasant, and a cause of waking.

The simplest fix is to shift the bed a few dozen centimetres, or place it under the third of the room away from the unit. If the light point is really badly placed, an electrician can move it 50 cm to 1 m in an hour. In any case, feet under the blades and head away is the configuration that lets you sleep.

The light and settings that go with it

In a bedroom a cool-white ceiling light is a mistake: it prevents the body's temperature drop before sleep. The Boréal 107 offers three colour temperatures, including a dimmable 2700 K warm white for the evening and a 4000 K neutral white for making the bed in the morning. The remote stays on the bedside table: light, speed and winter mode without getting up.

Evening: warm light at 30 %, speed 1. Night: light off, speed 1, 30 dB. Morning: neutral light, fan off or speed 1 in winter mode outside the hot season. A 15 m² bedroom is set once, then lived in.

Bedroom of 12 to 16 m²: a compact 107 cm flush ceiling fan, fitted in the centre of the room with the headboard away, set to speed 1 at night. The Boréal 107 is exactly that unit: 107 cm, 15 cm deep, invisible when off, 30 dB, dimmable warm LED and remote on the bedside table.

Frequently asked questions

Which ceiling fan diameter for a 15 m² bedroom?+

107 cm. It is the size for the 10 to 21 m² range: it moves the whole bedroom's air at speed 1 or 2 without a draught. A 132 cm would be oversized, permanently held at its minimum and visually overwhelming.

Does a ceiling fan suit a bedroom with a 2.5 m ceiling?+

Yes, with a compact flush model 15 to 20 cm deep: the blades stay at 2.3 to 2.35 m, above the 2.2 m minimum. A downrod model would drop to 2.1 m, too low.

Where to place the fan relative to the bed?+

In the centre of the bedroom, with the foot of the bed under the blades and the headboard away. A fan right above the headboard sends air onto the face and causes waking. Shifting the bed or moving the light point solves it.
