White ceiling fans: the art of disappearing into the ceiling

There are two schools of ceiling fan: the one that owns it as a statement object, and the one that would rather not see it at all, airflow without presence, a ceiling that stays a ceiling. This guide is written for the second school.
Well chosen, a flush white fan does better than go unnoticed: it makes the room feel larger. Here is how, and what to check before buying.
Why does a white fan make the room feel larger?
The eye reads interiors through contrast. A dark object on the ceiling visually lowers the ceiling line; a white body on a white ceiling reduces contrast to almost nothing, so the gaze slides past and the ceiling keeps its full perceived height.
It is the same principle as recessed spots painted tone-on-tone: the less a technical element stands out, the more continuous the volume feels. White also ages well, trends pass, a white ceiling stays.
Flush mount or downrod: which for discretion?
A flush mount fixes the body directly against the ceiling, no downrod: the silhouette becomes a flat disc with blades. On a standard 2.50 m ceiling it is often the only option, since 2.10 m must remain between floor and blades.

Acoustic discretion: the other half of the contract
A fan you barely see but constantly hear has failed. Current DC motors run at 28 to 34 dB depending on speed, below a whisper, quiet enough to run all night in a bedroom.
