Which painting above the sofa: format, height, orientation, the method in four measurements
Published on ·4 min read

The wall above the sofa is the one you look at most: facing the living-room entrance, behind guests, in the background of every photo. It is also where people get it wrong most often, with a frame too small that floats, too high that detaches, or three posters chattering.
This method fits in four measurements and two orientation rules. It applies to any canvas, and we use the IS × SEY Maison formats as examples, from the 50 × 20 cm panoramic to Golden Brown's 40 × 30 cm.
Measurement 1: width, between half and two thirds of the sofa
A sofa is 180 to 240 cm wide. A single canvas above it should take between half and two thirds of that width, 90 to 160 cm wide for a 180 to 240 cm sofa. Below half, the canvas floats in an empty space and the wall looks unfinished; beyond two thirds, it crushes the sofa.
Few unique canvases are 120 cm wide, and that is where the second rule comes in: the width can be composed with two or three canvases. Two 40 × 30 cm canvases side by side, 6 cm apart, make 86 cm: perfect for a 160 to 180 cm sofa. A 50 × 20 cm panoramic, like Pics F1 or Glass of wine, stands alone above a 140 cm two-seater, or as a pair above a three-seater.
Measurement 2: the height of the frame bottom
The bottom of the frame sits 15 to 25 cm above the sofa's backrest. It is the measurement everyone misses by hanging at standing eye level, as in a hallway: above a sofa you sit, and the canvas must stay attached to the furniture. At 40 cm above the backrest it detaches and floats.
Concretely, for a sofa whose backrest reaches 85 cm from the floor, the frame bottom sits between 100 and 110 cm from the floor. The centre of a 30 cm tall canvas then falls around 120 cm: lower than the 145 cm rule of a free wall, and rightly so, you look at it seated.
- ·Backrest at 85 cm: frame bottom between 100 and 110 cm from the floor
- ·High backrest at 100 cm: frame bottom between 115 and 125 cm
- ·Always a 15 to 25 cm gap, whatever the canvas size

Measurements 3 and 4: orientation and the gap between several canvases
A sofa is a horizontal line. A landscape canvas extends it; a portrait canvas alone contradicts it and creates tension. Portrait works above a sofa as a pair or trio, aligned at the bottom, where the ensemble becomes horizontal again. Golden Brown, 40 × 30 cm landscape, is enough above a two-seater; paired with Warm 50s, it covers a three-seater.
The gap between two canvases stays between 5 and 8 cm: enough for each to breathe, not enough for them to separate. Align at the bottom, never at the centre, to keep the sofa's line. And do not mix series: two canvases by the same artist, the same hand, converse; two posters of different origins argue.
The light above the sofa: do not forget the ceiling
A canvas above the sofa is mostly seen in the evening, under the ceiling light. Cool white at 6000 K flattens the colours; warm white at 2700 K, dimmed to 40 %, reveals the raw black and the golden window of Golden Brown. That is the argument for a temperature-adjustable ceiling light rather than a dedicated spot that needs installing.
The Boréal 107 does that job in the centre of the living room: warm light on the canvas in the evening, neutral by day, and coolness in summer without any fan competing with the wall, since its blades are folded when it is not running. The canvas is the wall's focal point, the ceiling light stays discreet: that is the composition that holds.
Width between half and two thirds of the sofa, frame bottom 15 to 25 cm above the backrest, landscape alone or portrait in pairs, 5 to 8 cm between two canvases aligned at the bottom: four measurements and the most looked-at wall in the house is composed. The IS × SEY Maison canvases, in 40 × 30 and 50 × 20 cm, lend themselves to these combinations, alone or paired, under a warm light that reveals them.
Frequently asked questions
What size painting above a sofa?+
Between half and two thirds of the sofa's width: 90 to 120 cm for a 180 cm sofa. If the canvas is smaller, pair it with a second from the same series, aligned at the bottom 5 to 8 cm apart, to reach that width.
How high to hang a painting above a sofa?+
The frame bottom 15 to 25 cm above the backrest. For an 85 cm backrest, the frame bottom between 100 and 110 cm from the floor. Higher, the canvas detaches from the sofa and floats on the wall.
Portrait or landscape above a sofa?+
Landscape for a single canvas: it extends the sofa's horizontal line. Portrait only as a pair or trio, aligned at the bottom, so the ensemble becomes horizontal again.
