One room, one light point: how to manage without building work

In the vast majority of homes, a room receives one electrical feed at the ceiling. Everything else has to go through wall sockets. That constraint decides the lighting of an interior long before budget or taste do.
The good news is that you can get comfortable light out of it without opening a wall, provided you give up the idea that one luminaire will do everything.
Why a single point lights badly
A single source at the ceiling sends light vertically. Faces get shadows under the eyes and nose, objects are flattened, and the corners of the room stay dark because light reaches them poorly. That is waiting-room lighting, and it has nothing to do with the number of lumens.
The discomfort comes from direction, not quantity. Raising the power of the ceiling light corrects nothing: it delivers the same hard light, simply stronger.

The three-source rule, without building work
A pleasant interior layers three heights of light: the ceiling for general brightness, the middle level for living, and the floor for atmosphere. That rule can be respected in full with one ceiling feed, because the other two levels plug into sockets.
In practice: the ceiling light carries half to two thirds of the total need, a sofa or reading lamp covers the middle level, and a low lamp or an uplighter aimed at a wall softens the whole. Two sockets are enough.

- ·Low level: a floor lamp or a lamp aimed at a light-coloured wall

Making the light point work harder
Since there is only one, it may as well do more than light. A dimmable ceiling light replaces two moods: full power for tidying, ten per cent for an evening. A model with adjustable temperature replaces two more, the 4000K of the morning and the 2700K of the evening.
Some go further and add a function that has nothing to do with light. The Boréal 107 occupies that same fixing point as an LED ceiling light, and deploys four retractable blades when it gets hot: two uses on the only feed available, with no extra socket and no visible cable.
A single light point does not condemn a room, it only forbids asking everything of it. Let it carry general brightness, add two plug-in lamps for the zones where people settle, and choose a ceiling model adjustable in both intensity and temperature. It is the cheapest way to get lighting that looks like the interiors people photograph.

Can you add a light point without building work?+
Not without running cable. Two lamps plugged into sockets, however, reproduce exactly the effect you are after, low sources completing the ceiling, for incomparably less cost and time.

Aim at 100 to 150 lumens per square metre in a living space, and let the ceiling light carry half to two thirds of that total. The rest comes from low lamps, which make the light comfortable.
Does a very powerful ceiling light replace the lamps?+
No, because the problem is the direction of the light, not its quantity. A stronger ceiling light gives the same vertical light, harder, with the same shadows under the eyes.
