Ceiling light and low ceiling: the height you must not go under

A 2.40 m ceiling is nothing unusual: it is the height of most homes built since the seventies, and of many converted upper floors. It causes no problem at all as long as you hang nothing.
The moment you choose a luminaire, every centimetre counts, and whole families become impractical.
The clearances to respect
The basic rule is clear passage: you must be able to walk through without ducking or brushing the luminaire, which means at least 2 m between the floor and the lowest point of the object. Under a 2.40 m ceiling, that leaves 40 cm of total depth, mounting included.
That margin looks comfortable until you check real models. A classic pendant drops 40 to 80 cm, a fan downrod 30 cm at minimum. Only flush profiles remain, dropping 5 to 15 cm.

The exception of the table
One place escapes the passage rule: above a dining table, nobody stands. That is the only case where a pendant stays possible under a low ceiling, provided it sits 75 to 90 cm above the tabletop.
Everywhere else, entrance, hallway, bedroom, open kitchen, a pendant under 2.50 m is paid for in knocked heads and permanent visual obstruction. A ceiling light is not a compromise there, it is the right call.
The special case of moving appliances
A still luminaire can come down to 2 m safely. An appliance with a rotating part asks for more: the commonly accepted clearance is 2.10 m between floor and the bottom of the blades, so they stay out of reach of a raised arm.
Under a 2.40 m ceiling, that leaves 30 cm for mounting, body and blades. No downrod model fits, and shortening a rod is not a solution: the appliance is balanced for the intended length. Only profiles specifically designed to mount flush, around 25 cm of total height, respect that clearance.
Measure before choosing, and remember two numbers: 2 m of clear passage for a luminaire, 2.10 m under the blades for a moving appliance. Under a 2.50 m ceiling, that rules out pendants away from tables and every downrod model. Flush profiles remain, and they are not a fallback: they are designed precisely for this constraint.
