Hanging a painting at the right height: the museum rule, room by room

Nine paintings out of ten are hung too high. You aim for the free spot on the wall, drive the nail at raised-arm height, and the work floats above heads, cut off from the room. A well-hung canvas, on the contrary, looks as if it had always been there.
This guide gives the rule museums follow, then the adjustments by room and furniture, with precise measurements. It ends with what everyone forgets: the light falling from the ceiling.
The 145 cm rule: why museums hang low
In most museums the centre of the work sits between 145 and 152 cm from the floor, the average eye height of a standing adult. The gaze lands naturally on the middle of the canvas without lifting the head: the work is looked at, not gazed up at.
At home this rule applies to a free wall: hallway, entrance, landing, office, the back wall of a living room with no furniture below. Measure 145 cm from the floor, find the centre of the canvas, work out the hook position from the frame height and the hanger on the back. A 41 × 27 cm canvas hung this way, like Saxophone from the IS × SEY Maison series, has its top edge at about 165 cm.
Above a sofa, a bed, a console: the rule changes
As soon as there is furniture below, the painting no longer converses with the eye but with the furniture. The rule becomes a gap: 15 to 25 cm between the top of the sofa back or headboard and the bottom of the frame. More, and the work detaches from the furniture; less, and it seems to sit on it.
Above a console or sideboard you can even go down to 10 cm and let the canvas rest visually on the piece, or physically lean it against the wall, which gives a more relaxed reading and lets you change the display without a hole.

Standing or sitting: adjust to the room
A living room is lived sitting down. The eye is 30 cm lower than standing: lower the centre to 135 or 140 cm, especially on the wall facing the sofa. A dining room is also lived seated, but the table already sets a low line: keep 140 cm. An entrance, hallway or kitchen is crossed standing: 145 cm.
In a bedroom the canvas is often seen from the bed, lying down. On the wall facing the bed you can go down to 130 cm; above the headboard, the 20 to 25 cm gap rule prevails. A warm-toned canvas like Warm 50s works particularly well facing the bed, where it is the last thing seen at night.
The ceiling light, the other half of the composition
A canvas well hung at noon can vanish at 9 pm if the light falls badly. A central cool-white ceiling light flattens it; a grazing spot reveals it but needs installing. The simplest compromise is a dimmable warm-white ceiling light that bathes the whole room softly in the evening and lets the canvas take on its colours.

With a dimmable warm-white ceiling light, 2700 K in the evening: it lights the whole room softly and lets the canvas colours show, with no extra installation. Cool white at 6000 K crushes the shadows and flattens a painting.
