Retractable blades or fixed blades: which ceiling fan for your room?

It is the first question in front of a catalogue: blades that fold away, or classic blades always on show? Both cool the room. They do not live the same way in it, and they do not cost the same.
This comparison takes the criteria one by one with the numbers that matter: the look when off, airflow, noise, maintenance, installation and price. In five minutes you will know which family fits your room.
The look when off: the criterion everyone forgets
A ceiling fan runs about four months a year. The rest of the time it sits switched off in the middle of the room, in front of you at every meal and every morning. A fixed-blade model remains a fan: four or five 60 cm blades hanging from the ceiling, whatever the season.
A retractable model closes into a ceiling light. The Boréal 107, for instance, folds into a 50 cm round body with its integrated LED: switched off, nobody guesses it is a fan. In a living room, bedroom or dining room where the ceiling is part of the decor, this is usually the deciding argument.

Airflow: what the numbers say and what you feel
At equal diameter, longer and wider fixed blades move a little more air at full speed. A 132 cm fixed-blade model can list a higher airflow than a 107 cm retractable. On paper, the gap exists.
In real use, nobody sleeps under a fan at speed 6. Nights are spent at speeds 1 to 3, where both families deliver a comparable breeze. The right question is not which blows hardest, but which is correctly sized for your floor area: 107 cm covers 10 to 21 m², 132 cm goes up to 25 or 30 m².

Noise and maintenance: the myths
You sometimes read that retractable blades are noisier because of their mechanism. With a well-built unit this is false: fan noise comes from the motor and blade balancing, not from the blade type. A well-balanced copper motor goes down to 30 dB at low speed, retractable or not. The only sound a retractable model has that a fixed one does not is the blades opening at start-up, one second, then nothing.
On maintenance, the retractable wins clearly. Fixed blades collect dust on their upper face, invisible from the floor, and need wiping every four to six weeks. Blades folded inside the body stay sheltered: a wipe of the ceiling light twice a year is enough.
Installation, price and the right choice per room
Both families mount on the existing light point in about thirty minutes. A compact retractable is lighter and easier to handle alone; a large fixed-blade model is more comfortable to fit with two people.
On budget, a quality retractable with LED and remote sits around 150 to 200 euros. A fixed-blade model runs from 250 to over 400 euros for large solid-wood diameters. The retractable is also the most accessible choice to equip several rooms, especially with a bundle offer.
